Austrian Airlines will temporarily suspend its scheduled flights from Thursday 19 March 2020. The Austrian national airline is thus responding to the restrictions imposed by many countries in the face of the rapid spread of coronavirus in Europe.
The last flight is due to land in Vienna from Chicago on 19 March at 8.20am. As a first step, Austrian Airlines will cancel all flights until 28 March 2020, and passengers who have booked a flight during this period will, if possible, be transferred to other airlines. The last passengers should be able to be re-routed by the 19th.
However, some lines are already suspended like the Paris-Vienne whose last flights take place this Monday 16 March. Austrian operates six daily frequencies in France from Paris CDG to Vienna, two daily flights between Lyon and Vienna, 13 weekly flights from Basel-Mulhouse to Vienna and 12 weekly flights from Nice. The airline also serves Brussels and Geneva with several flights a day.
In addition, the airlines of the Lufthansa Group will further reduce their short-haul and long-haul flight schedules. These cancellations, which were announced on 17 March, will result in a sharp drop in long-haul services, particularly in the Middle East, Africa and Central and South America. Overall, the Lufthansa Group's seat capacity on long-haul routes will be reduced to 90 %. A total of 1,300 weekly frequencies were planned for summer 2020.
Visit EuropeThe flight schedule will also be reduced. From 17 March onwards, only around 20 %s of the originally planned capacity will be available. Originally, around 11,700 weekly short-haul flights were planned for summer 2020 with Lufthansa Group airlines.
Additional cancellations will be posted on the booking systems and websites of the group's airlines over the next few days, and passengers will be informed accordingly.
