Aeroflot relaunches a low-cost airline

European sanctions had grounded Aeroflot's ambitions in the low-cost segment. At the end of May, the airline had chosen to serve Simferopol in Crimea as its first destination. However, the Russian airline, which is a member of SkyTeam, is not abandoning its desire to connect the country's regions with low-cost flights, in particular to compete with S7, the domestic leader which joined oneworld in 2010.

Aeroflot's new low-cost subsidiary, called Pobeda, or Victory in Russian, operated its first commercial flight on 1 December between Moscow and Volgograd. This service is operated daily by Boeing B737-800NG from terminal A at Moscow's Vnukovo airport. The airline's fleet will be expanded by four aircraft by the end of the year. This will enable Pobeda to open new routes during December, with daily flights expected from Moscow to Yekaterinburg, Samara, Perm, Belgorod, Tyumen and Surgut. By 2018, Pobeda should have 40 aircraft and offer 45 routes.
