The Algerian national carrier Air Algérie will finally proceed with the renewal of its aircraft fleet. This renewal had been suspended indefinitely. by the government in 2020 with the health crisis.
This is a first for the company since the pandemic. The previous fleet renewal took place in 2016At the time, Air Algérie received Boeing 737 and Airbus A330. With an average age of 14 years for its 55 aircraft, the fleet needs a serious facelift.
The airline's new fleet renewal strategy could cost more than 1.7 billion. It is in fact part of a much wider restructuring initiative. The authorities are discussing the possibility of separate the carrier into several distinct entities.
No final decision on the type of aircraft has been taken. Air Algérie explained that it planned to study the possibilities of its network before deciding what type of aircraft it would need.
In all cases, the new equipment should be able to meet the requirements of long-haul operational requirements. The Algerian government wants Air Algérie to expand its intercontinental network. In particular, to serve new destinations in Africa and strengthen its position in Asia.
