Employees of large groups are unaware of this, as they have tailor-made subscriptions configured by specialist telecoms buyers. But 37 million tourists and some of the 110 million business travellers, who are more concerned with managing their costs, do. Communicating from abroad is almost a luxury, even within the European Union. The average price of a roaming call is €1.15 excluding VAT per minute. So much so that 15 % of tourists on the Old Continent do not take their mobile phone with them on their trip, according to a Eurobarometer survey.

Calling or being called abroad entails additional costs charged by the domestic operator. One solution is to do without the home operator when travelling. To take out a subscription outside your home country, you need to prove that you have a local place of residence for billing purposes, which is not always possible. Packages with no time commitment are still an option, but they are sometimes just as expensive as roaming, especially after the application of the European directive.
