Top-of-the-range smartphones are still attracting French consumers, according to the latest figures from GFK, with mobile sales forecast to grow by 2% in 2022. Consumers are looking for quality in terms of cutting-edge technology, but also sustainability and respect for the environment. Samsung is presenting its new generation of handsets that meet these three criteria.
The new Galaxy S23 series is available as usual in three modelsthe S23, the S23+ and the S23 Ultra with three Amoled screen sizes, 6.1-inch, 6.6-inch and 6.8-inch for the top-of-the-range version, the S23 UltraAll feature a central punch for the front camera. This new family is also designed to be more environmentally friendly, using recycled materials such as aluminium, glass and plastic. Above all, each of the three models will not feature the Korean manufacturer's in-house chip, but the Qualcomm's latest-generation processorfor increased power.
The Galaxy S23 Ultra is the flagship of this new generation of smartphones. With its XXL screen, it offers adaptive refresh rates depending on activity, from 1 to 120 hZ. In terms of design, there's no revolution, just the same clean lines as its predecessor, the Galaxy S22 Ultra. The Galaxy S23 Ultra stands out, however, with slightly curvilinear lines around its edges. The screen is protected by a new version of Gorilla Glass. Sustainability is the name of the game for this premium smartphone, with IP68 certification and even a repairability index of 8.2 out of 10. On the rear, the impressive camera unit is set directly into the casing for a more discreet effect.
Imaging is at the heart of the Galaxy S23 Ultra, both in terms of photography and video. This flagship is Samsung's first mobile phone to feature a 200MP main sensor. This promises more detailed and luminous photos, but also potentially larger files. The benefits of such a sensor will clearly lie in the production of large-format, quality photos for business travellers wishing to project their images for marketing purposes. In terms of leisure activities, however, it will be more difficult to share photos taken while travelling on social networks. However, you will be able to modulate the resolution to 50MP or 12MP.
In addition to a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens and a 10MP telephoto lens (3x) typical of the entire S23 range, the Galaxy S23 Ultra stands out from its other two siblings thanks to a second telephoto lens with 10x optical zoom. Compared to its predecessor in 2022, the Galaxy S23 Ultra has significantly improved optical stabilisation. Added to this is the possibility of filming in 8K at thirty frames per second, a new feature of the S23 model. Improved sensors, not to mention a software architecture with ad hoc artificial intelligence processing, push back the limits of shooting and video, even in low-light conditions.
This general optimisation would not have been possible without the new additions to the Galaxy S23 series. Major new feature, Samsung is abandoning its in-house chip for Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor. A major benefit, Qualcomm's most powerful processor now equips the Korean manufacturer's top-of-the-range handsets, and the two companies have worked together to integrate it into these smartphones. The power ensures a fluid experience when using your mobile in the traditional way, as well as when processing images. What's more, the whole package ensures greater autonomy despite the use of photo and video images, theoretically allowing more than a day's operation.
The S23 Ultra with its 6.8-inch Amoled screen comes with an S-Open stylus, slid into the bottom right-hand edge. Following in the footsteps of the Galaxy Note tablets, this smartphone has been adapted to become a professional mobile tool so it can be used directly for rapid note-taking and other classic productivity functions.
Professional use means confidentiality. In addition to its fingerprint reader, Samsung is offering Galaxy S23 Ultra owners its home security system. Already present in the previous generation Galaxy S22 Ultra, Knox Vault provides protection by isolating the most sensitive data (biometric data, passwords, Blockchain keys, etc.) and offers a confidentiality and security dashboard to control the accessibility of data.
Three storage formats are available for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, with the ultimate in storage, one terabyteThis version comes with the flagship's most expensive price tag, €1,839. A price that is higher than that of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, in line with the rise in prices of competitors such as Apple in this inflationary context.
