A new Android feature recently discovered by the 9to5 Google site allows you to check in a boarding pass directly on your smartphone. The discovery was made almost by accident on 6 May, when a journalist from the specialist site was buying a Southwest Airlines ticket. The airline's website suggested that he download his boarding pass onto his smartphone using a Google button. It would have been stored on the Google Pay application. The latter has recently added an option allowing integrate transport tickets or loyalty cards. It is in this section, currently categorised as "Rewards, Gift Cards & Offers", that boarding passes are stored.
Of course, this feature is nothing new in the world of travel applications. But when it comes to Google, the scope of the information is necessarily on a different scale. This won't be the company's first foray into the travel market: tools like Google Flights or Trips had already won over many users. This new option, which might seem anecdotal today, nevertheless says a lot about the intentions of the web superpower. Especially as the functionality will probably not remain restricted to Southwest Airlines.
