Eating out
For a quick bite to eat at a reasonable price, there's no better place than the central market. Right in the heart of the city, you'll find around twenty food shops and restaurants (www.storasaluhallen.se). On the go and for less than 15 euros, Kåges offers traditional Swedish cuisine. We go there without a reservation! ¨To eat the best Swedish open sandwiches with prawns (smörgås), we'll be tempted by Heaven 23 in the Gothia Towers Hotel. The sandwiches are huge and succulent, and the view over Gothenburg's rooftops is breathtaking! Restaurang 28+ is Michelin-starred. It has an excellent reputation for its inventive, contemporary cuisine and one of the best wine cellars in Sweden.
Discover
Gothenburg's historic centre is relatively compact and easy to visit. The historic old town around the canals stretches between the central station and the former headquarters of the Swedish East India Company, now the Gothenburg Historical Museum. It's also hard to miss AvenynThis long, linear boulevard crosses the city, looking like the Champs-Elysées with its imposing 19th-century houses, and ends with a grand finale at the Musée des Beaux-Arts.
The Haga district is probably Gothenburg's most charming district. This is a perfectly preserved 19th century, with opulent ashlar and brick buildings and neo-classical villas. Haga is the ideal place to go out, with its bistros, clubs and nightclubs.
The Musée des Beaux Arts has one of the finest collections of paintings in Northern Europe, including a number of Impressionists and paintings by Picasso (goteborgskonstmuseum.se). Other museums worth visiting include the Gothenburg Historical Museum (goteborgsstadsmuseum.se) offers an interactive journey through the city's turbulent history. Finally, the Röhsska Design Museum has a formidable collection of Asian art and very Scandinavian design (rohsska.se).
Getting around

Göteborg's sustainability credentials an impressive collection of recycled clothing boutiquesantiques and design. Haga has many of these shops (hagashopping.se). More conventional but very central, Nordstan is a shopping centre with around a hundred shops, not forgetting NK Nordiska Kompaniet, the most luxurious department stores' in town. The good news is that there's no need to change euros into kroner. Everything can be paid for by credit card, and Gothenburg is one of the world's leading cities for contactless payment.
