Rothko's abstraction is best remembered for its fields of colour... Combinations of fir green and blood red or ultramarine blue, navy blue and vibrant yellow, dirty greys and whites, deep blacks... a whole festival of bright or powdery colours obtained by superimposing several layers of paint that ultimately reveal a great emotional charge. Mark Rothko, a native of the Russian Empire who became a naturalised American, was a passionate artist who lived a turbulent life, expressing anguish and tragedy as well as euphoria and ecstasy in his canvases. The exhibition focuses on his "classic style" paintings, but also includes older works that are much less frequently exhibited.
