L'Euroairport Basel-Mulhouse is becoming increasingly popular for holiday destinations to the Mediterranean. This can be seen in the timetables of the summer flight plan 2023 (valid from 26 March 2023 to 28 October 2023). The Franco-Swiss hub will nevertheless offer 100 destinations with direct flights.
The Mediterranean and North Africa in the spotlight
On the Mediterranean, Larnaca (Cyprus) will be served by both Cyprus Airways (one flight a week) and Easyjet (two flights per week). Easyjet will also be competing with Wizzair on Basel/Mulhouse-Rome. The Hungarian carrier will be offering three weekly flights during the summer season. It is also launching two flights a week on Iasi in Romania. Easyjet to continue operating its Marseille route this summer with two flights a week.
On theNorth Africathe Belgian company Nouvelair launches two flights a week to Tunis and a weekly service to Djerba. ASL Airlines competes with Air Algérie on Constantine with a weekly flight.
The airport is also announcing route increases to Antalya (Pegasus and Sun Express, 25 weekly flights in total), Barcelona (Vueling with two to three daily flights), Casablanca (Air Arabia, 5 flights/week), Dublin (Ryanair, 5 flights/week), Hurghada (Air Cairo, 3 flights/week), Montréal (Air Transat, two flights/week) and Zagreb (Ryanair, 4 flights/week).
Temporary cancellation of Lufthansa flights to Munich
On the other hand, the airport will lose a major route to a leading hub. Lufthansawhich is facing staff shortages, has decided to temporarily suspend all its flights (up to 3 frequencies per day) to Munich. The suspension begins on 26 March and is due to last until 14 August... However, the airline will continue to fly the Basel/Mulhouse-Frankfurt route.
The airport is expecting a busy summer, the authorities ask passengers to arrive at least two hours in advance. So as not to end up in endless queues at passport control. Yet the airport has only welcomed 7 million passengers in 2022.This is a far cry from 2019's record of 9.1 million passengers.
