The Asian chain was due to open its first Spanish address in Barcelona at the end of November. Located on the prestigious Passeig de Gracia, this five-star hotel has been designed in a modern building dating from the last century and renovated by Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola. Urquiola's vision of the hotel is one of pure, horizontal lines, with oriental touches that can be found in all 98 rooms and in the spa. True to the chain's image, the Mandarin Oriental Barcelona has called on Michelin-starred chef Carme Ruscalleda to head up its two restaurants, Blanc and Moments. There is also a rooftop swimming pool overlooking the city.
Almost at the same time, on the other side of the Atlantic, the Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas opened its doors. This 43-storey hotel with 303 rooms and 89 suites, including three presidential suites, faces the MGM City Center Complex on the Strip. Once again, the catering was entrusted to a renowned chef, Frenchman Pierre Gagnaire.
This is not the end of the Asian chain's push into the West. Next year, it is due to open the Mandarin Oriental Jnan Rahma in Marrakech. Nestling in a 65-hectare palm grove, it will have 145 rooms and suites as well as four riads. The décor of this haven of peace will be typically Moroccan, using local artists. The spa will feature a hammam with traditional treatments on the menu.
Then, in 2011, it will be Paris' turn to add to the Group's portfolio. The new establishment is currently taking shape in an Art Deco building on the rue Saint-Honoré. Further openings have been announced in Milan, Moscow and Marbella over the next three years.
