In June 2022 Brussels has returned to more or less normal traffic levels. The Belgian hub handled 1.73 million passengers, an increase of 168% compared with June 2021.. This still represents a fall of 28% compared with June 2019, before the crisis.
However, airport management notes that this is the best result in absolute terms since the start of the Covid crisis. Passenger numbers could have been even better had it not been for the various social movements which affected the airport during the week of 20 June. Several airlines also experienced occasional cancellations due to capacity problems at European airports.
The number of departing passengers is higher than the number of arriving passengers due to the start of the summer holidays, for some, during the last days of June. The proportion of transfer passengers on departure is 14.5% and therefore remains 3 percentage points lower than in 2019, due to the stronger recovery in local departures and a reduction in transfers, particularly within Europe.
Top 10 countries most visited from Brussels Airport in June consisted of Spain, Italy, Germany, Turkey, Greece, Portugal, the United States, France, the United Kingdom and Morocco. The top ten destinations in June were Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon, Rome, Milan, London, Istanbul, Vienna, Malaga and Frankfurt.
Target of over 15 million passengers by 2022?
In the first six months of 2022, Brussels airport will have handled 7.75 million passengers.. This represents an increase of 300% compared with 2021. However, this result is still 37% lower than in 2019. Between January and June 2019, the hub welcomed almost 12.3 million passengers.
In its latest estimates, the airport expects a total of 4 million passengers in July and August. At the end of the year, this could mean over 15 million passengers by 2022…
