It is now thought that the man who revolutionised 17th-century painting with his sometimes brutal realism, his disturbing eroticism and his extraordinary use of clairobscur, used optical instruments based on the scientific knowledge of the time. We see mirrors, lenses and works that may have inspired him. Four paintings are used to support these demonstrations - the Fruit Basket, the Sick Bacchus, the Medusa and Saint Jerome Writing - and reveal the world of a figure too often reduced to the label of "cursed painter".
