"The Tech City initiative was launched by Prime Minister David Cameron in 2010 to diversify London's economy and stimulate the growth potential of the technology companies already operating in East London. My role, and that of everyone involved in the venture, has been to extend this initiative to the whole of the UK's digital ecosystem in order to accelerate its growth. With Shoreditch as our anchor, we have become a major organisation, able to give a boost to the high-tech companies that are developing across the country. According to a study by Oxford University, the digital sector is now growing faster than any other in Britain. This is due to a convergence of several factors: top-level academic institutions, infrastructure innovation and excellent transport links to the capital. Since 2010, the number of digital businesses has grown exponentially in East London and the rest of the city. Tech City runs a programme called 'Future Fifty' which supports 50 companies with high growth potential. In 2014, these companies employed 15,000 people and generated revenue of over £2 billion, equivalent to average growth of over 60 %. Four of them have just been listed on the London Stock Exchange. We are now turning our attention to artificial intelligence and digital learning.
