Between 'visios' for work and virtual aperitifs with friends, the Covid-19 crisis has given a boost to the market for videoconferencing solutions. Since the start of the pandemic, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet have doubled and tenfolded their audience respectively, to reach 75 million and 50 million subscribers. Pure player in videoconferencing, Zoom claimed over 300 million daily users at the height of the lockdown.
However, Zoom was singled out for its security flaws, which the Californian publisher has since been trying to correct. The American NGO Consumer Report criticised Zoom, Microsoft, Google and Cisco Webex for collecting personal data. Faced with these risks, the Interministerial Digital Department (Dinum) and Orange Cyberdéfense point out that there are alternative offerings, such as the open source tools BigBlueButton and Jitsi, or the solution from French vendor Tixeo, the only one certified by the French national agency for information systems security (Anssi). " Where our competitors are just starting to think about end-to-end encryption as an option for their users, Tixeo has managed to stay one step ahead in the secure video collaboration market."explained Renaud Ghia, CEO of Tixeo, last June.
In mid-October, Zoom announced the introduction of end-to-end encryption (E2EE) to strengthen its security. Still being tested by users, this change should be deployed in the coming weeks. " We are pleased to launch phase 1 of 4 of our E2EE offering, which provides robust protections to help prevent the interception of decryption keys that could be used to monitor the content of meetings. " said Max Krohn, Head of Security Engineering at Zoom. To use it, customers must activate E2EE meetings and end-to-end encryption in their account settings.
