In 2020, the airport welcomed just over 9 million passengers. Including 5.6 million in the first quarter alone, just before the pandemic. Initial provisional figures show traffic exceeds 9.9 million passengers. The airport is therefore missing out on double-digit passenger traffic for last year. But it believes it should be able to accommodate 17 million passengers by 2022. And that its record of almost 36 million could be reached again in 2025.
Additional infrastructure to improve passenger flow
2021 was a difficult year for the airport once again making the headlines in Germany and abroad for its inability to handle peak traffic between August and October. Staff shortages and more complex check-in processes due to Covid resulted in queues at the counters lasting up to several hours. Not to mention baggage delivery failures, water pollution problems and a fire alarm that forced the complete evacuation of the terminal, for no real reason...
The news President of the FBB airport authority, Aletta von Massenbachhad indicated in November 2021 that it was working on solutions. In December, the authorities opened the the airport's second runway. The two-runway system will be able to cope with aircraft movements estimated at between 3,000 and 4,600 per month. For the Easter holidays, Aletta von Massenbach also announced the opening of terminal T2. These two infrastructures should largely solve the congestion problems.
T2 has an additional capacity of 6 million passengers. This will bring total theoretical terminal capacity to 31 million. That's almost double what the airport is expecting in 2022...
