Lufthansa revamps its «Green Fares»

Facing a European Union that wants to put an end to "greenwashing" in the air, Lufthansa has just taken action by renaming its fare "Green Fare". Is this just a marketing trick or a genuine concern for change?

In September, the European Union strengthened its surveillance of misleading advertising around measures to protect the environment. This is effectively what is known as «greenwashing,» a practice well-known among many companies that want to show off their environmental credentials.

The EU had thus already signed in 2025 an agreement with 21 airlines that had committed to no longer use this type of public advertising and to offer more transparency about their actions in favor of the environment.

The Lufthansa Group has finally implemented this resolution. It has renamed its Green Fare tariff as Impact Fare. This new name emphasizes more the contribution of customers to a more sustainable aviation and thus takes into account the new regulatory requirements regarding environmental communication.

By choosing an Impact Fare rate, passengers contribute to the additional use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) across the entire Lufthansa Group network. They also support selected climate protection projects outside the company’s value chain. According to the projects, these initiatives aim to avoid or eliminate CO₂ emissions. Customers can book the Impact Fare rate with the Lufthansa Group airlines, in all travel classes.

How does the Impact Fare work? ?

For each booking at the Impact Fare rate, the Lufthansa Group uses an additional amount of SAF in its air operations within six months of the departure date. For intra-European flights, this volume corresponds to 20 % of the estimated CO₂ emissions associated with the flight. The fare also contributes to the financing of climate protection projects. The amount of this contribution is calculated based on the % remaining 80 estimated CO₂ emissions associated with the flight.

For intercontinental flights, this distribution is 10 % for the SAF and 90 % for the climate projects. To be a bit incentive-based, the Lufthansa Group will offer some benefits to passengers who choose an «Impact Fare».

Passengers will receive additional miles and points on Miles & More. Depending on the booking class and destination, the Impact Fare will also include more flexible or free modification options.

The carrier indicates that since the launch of Green Fares in February 2023, With more than five million passengers choosing Green Fare, the figure seems very significant but in fact it is very low compared to the total number of passengers carried between 2023 and the first half of 2026. In total, the group will have carried 389.1 million passengers during this period. This means that only 1.2% of its passengers have chosen a Green Fare. That’s better than nothing. Perhaps the term «Impact Fare» will be more successful.
