Are you betting on Mongolia's rapid development?

Roman Hauduroy - With all its resources, development seems inevitable and the capital has been transformed considerably over the last decade. However, we mustn't forget that Mongolia is first and foremost a potential country. We're betting on its future, but it's not all real yet. Mongolia is a young democracy that functions quite well. But in parliament, many different economic interests are represented. The local authorities, the government, trading partners such as Russia and China, and major multinationals do not always see development in the same way. It's a bit early to talk about a success story, but the story is underway...

Are French companies well positioned in Mongolia?

R. H. - Several CAC 40 companies have large-scale projects. In addition, an economic advisor at the French Embassy is working on this on a permanent basis, as is the new Franco-Mongolian Chamber of Commerce, of which I am a member, and where I will be involved in supporting initiatives concerning the tourism industry in the broadest sense. Others specialise in real estate, mining, energy, agri-food and luxury goods. The aim of this chamber of commerce is to contribute to the development of economic exchanges between France and Mongolia, by fostering relations between the business communities and providing practical support to companies.

Is the tourism infrastructure up to the task?

R. H. - Mongolia needs to develop its air links in order to expand its business relations. To this end, a new international airport and several five-star hotels are well under construction. As the country lacks the human and logistical resources to develop mass tourism, I believe that the future of tourism in Mongolia lies in developing the upmarket segment. The business tourism market and the creation of a spa offering in the centre of the country, which is home to many natural parks, for example, have strong development potential and could help to develop the country's international image.
