Baggage is a juicy source of revenue for airlines. For several years now, their carriage in the hold is increasingly expensive for the passenger. Let's start, however, with some good news, which is quite rare in today's air transport industry. Air France-KLM has decided to revise the amount of excess baggage to be paid at the airport. Instead of a flat-rate amount, a fare increase will be applied. in three stages will be applied. Each step corresponds to three kilograms of excess baggage: 24-26 kg, 27-29 kg and 30-32 kg. This increase applies to the standard baggage allowance stated on the ticket.
This new excess baggage rate scale applies to customers travelling in Economy, Premium Economy and Premium Comfort class on flights marketed and operated by Air France or KLM. And only in the last minute. This means that this fare applies to only at the counter airport check-in desk. If the flight is marketed by Air France-KLM, but operated by another airline, the same package applies.
Thanks to this new price scale, the amount of excess baggage to be paid for the first three kilos is approximately 70 % cheaper than the traditional package.
Hold baggage costs more
However, the airline group has also changed the baggage fees for baggage purchased more than 24 hours before departure. And this will cost passengers more. Both airlines are applying an increase that includes between 5 and 10 euros on short and medium-haul flights. On long-haul Air France and KLM routes (excluding routes to North America and Tahiti), passengers will pay an additional fare of €10.
Customers purchasing additional baggage on top of their standard baggage allowance pay the "best price", from 365 days to 8 days before departure. Additional baggage purchased between seven days and 24 hours before departure costs an extra 5 euros. In high season, both airlines charge an additional 5 euros.
SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus customers, including Flying Blue members with Elite and Elite Plus status, can always use free of charge an additional baggage item. Flying Blue Explorer members continue to benefit from a 10% discount on their first hold bag purchased more than 24 hours before departure on flights marketed and operated by Air France and/or KLM. Unfortunately, it is impossible to give a price list for the different baggage packages here. Prices vary according to destination and class. It only appears on an individual booking.
