Brussels Airport has been offering a new system allowing passengers to check in their own baggage. Armed with their boarding card, passengers can short and medium-haul flights from Brussels Airlinesas well as other companies in the Lufthansa GroupIn addition, passengers can print their own baggage labels and check them in.
The authorities have created a new zone with 16 label kiosks and 6 baggage drop-off points (bag drop). It is located near row 4 in the departures hall. Baggage is weighed and conveyed via automatic conveyors. Brussels Airlines agents are available to provide assistance to passengers.
Le Baggage drop-off saves passengers a considerable amount of time. It also increases the number of passengers checked in with baggage. According to Brussels Airlines, over 75 % of passengers have already checked in online and are in possession of their boarding card before arriving at Brussels Airport. The new system will therefore speed up the formalities before passengers enter the reserved area. The system is capable of handling up to 400 passengers per hour. Passengers who wish to do so can always go to the usual check-in desks.
Value-added service with the return of traffic
Le Baggage drop-off was gradually brought into service during the summer holidays and is now fully operational. In July and August, the airport recorded 35,000 baggage items checked in using the new system.. This represents almost 10% of the Lufthansa group's short and medium-haul flight baggage. This large-scale pilot project will be closely monitored with a view to possible future expansion.
