Barely twenty years ago, flying passengers didn't ask themselves any questions: to get from point A to point B, the simplest option was a direct flight, if they lived near a major airport; if they came from a smaller town, they had to transit via a "hub", in aviation jargon a hub connecting flights from all over the world.
