Biometrics is nothing new at Dubai Airport. Innovative by nature, the hub had already deployed this technology within terminal 3 to offecilitate a seamless travel experience for Emirates passengers. But only if they are residents of the United Arab Emirates or nationals of the Gulf Cooperation Council nations. From 2023, all international travellers will be able to take advantage of this simplified passage through the various checkpoints at the airport under an agreement between the Dubai-based airline and the General Directorate of Immigration, Naturalisation and Foreign Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA).

The GDFRA's biometric database, cross-referenced with artificial intelligence systems, makes it possible to identify a person's identity. the link between the face and the passport will be used to identify passengers at several points in the airport. Provided they have given their prior consent - whether via the Emirates app, at automatic check-in kiosks or at the airline's check-in counters - passengers bound for Dubai or connecting flights will be able to move smoothly through the check-in areas, lounges, boarding area and immigration department of Dubai International Airport's Terminal 3.
Like Emirates, British Airways is counting on the deployment of biometrics to facilitate passenger journeys. The British company was already using this technology on its domestic flights and is now extending its reach internationally. For six months, passengers on flights between London and Malaga will be able to test an "intelligent" way of travelling on an optional basis. without having to show their passport.
Before arriving at the airport, travellers taking part in the trial will be asked to scan their face, passport and boarding pass. on their smartphone or their tablet, via the airline's app. On arrival at London Heathrow terminal 5, Smart Bio-Pod cameras will check their identity in less than three seconds, allowing them to move freely around the airport. They will also be able to use the Fast-Track security lane and benefit from free priority boarding.

If the trial is successful, the solution should be extended to other international flights.
