Since 2008, the Terra Natura association has been offering small incentive groups of up to twelve people the chance to enjoy a unique solidarity experience in Kenya: total immersion in a Maasai village. "The aim is to raise participants' awareness of nature and ecology," explains Vincent Doucet, who runs the project with Samuel Sekerot Ole Mpetti, an authentic Maasai.
Accommodation is at Leganishu Camp, in traditional Maasai houses measuring 32 m2, made from branches and covered in cow dung. Each has a double bed, shower and bathroom facilities. The entire site has been designed to be environmentally friendly, with solar panels for heating, for example. The Masai are responsible for welcoming guests.
Of the 1,545 euros paid for each participant, 45 % go to the tribe to finance micro-projects: housing rehabilitation, help with schooling, solar electrification of homes, etc. The activities on offer include traditional safaris in 4×4 and on foot, and walks with a Masai. Six incentive groups have already enjoyed this experience, and Terra Natura is planning to extend this type of holiday to Mozambique, with the Pokots tribe, but in the form of a travelling camp.
