GETTING THERE

JOONAir France's new-generation airline, has been operating a daily direct flight between Paris-CDG and Bergen since May, using an Airbus A320. The aircraft has two classes of travel, economy and business. The flight takes off from Paris at 2.35pm and arrives in Bergen at 4.50pm. On the return journey, departure at 5.40pm for a landing at 8pm.

Vatnahalsen Hoyfjellshotell

Fabulous! This huge red wooden building, isolated in the middle of snowfields in the style of The Shining - but much more cheerful - is only accessible by the famous Flamsbana train. Nicknamed the Saint Moritz of the North in the 1930s, the lodge was frequented by the happy few from all over Europe. Today, not much remains of the Roaring Twenties, apart from a unique atmosphere, enhanced by a profusion of small objects scattered everywhere; lace rugs and tablecloths, club armchairs and sofas with big stripes. There is also a billiards room, a panoramic lounge and a meeting room for 70 people. There are 40 rooms, all of which are a little spartan in terms of comfort.

Fretheim Hotel

With a history that began in the mid-19^e Built in the 19th century, it is without doubt one of the most historic hotels in the whole of Norway. The most glamorous too. With souvenirs everywhere, objects from yesteryear, here an old suitcase and there a phonograph, a unique atmosphere, chic and cosy, almost English. And with good reason: it was wealthy lords who launched the establishment when they stayed here on salmon fishing trips. Today, the hotel's white wooden shingles line the fjord and its 120 rooms and suites are divided into American, vintage and contemporary sections. There are two restaurants, a bar and fully equipped meeting rooms for 9 to 170 people in a separate wing.

A staircase as steep as it is awkward to reach two rooms with very low ceilings and floors that don't quite know which way to lean, lace curtains over small-paned windows... A charming setting in the Hanseatic quarter of Bryggen, for one of the city's most famous fish restaurants. The restaurant can be privatised for groups of up to 80 people.

Aegir BrygerriPub

You can spot it from a distance, as this pub is one of Flam's main attractions. The building is made entirely of wood, with sloping roofs almost touching the ground, and its architecture is freely inspired by the Viking way, with lots of walls and almost no windows. The interior is ad hoc, with a slightly haphazard Viking décor and a huge central fireplace around which you settle down for your first beer before moving on to the restaurant on the first floor. There you can sample a unique concept of tasting dishes - which are delicious by the way - accompanied by five different beers, all with the Aegir label, in other words, which has won numerous awards in international competitions. A must in Flam.

Arven

The excellent Arven restaurant is located on the second floor of the Fretheim hotel, with picture windows opening onto the fjord. The view is beautiful, of course, but so is the cuisine, with a menu offering updated Norwegian specialities, all made from local seasonal produce. On the menu: fish, lots of fish, but also smoked reindeer and, more surprisingly for dessert, brown cheese ice cream, a speciality supplied by the nearby village of Undredal.
