Star Alliance is introducing a new check-in concept in the south wing of terminal 1 at Tokyo - Narita. The new concept, launched by the alliance to save time for passengers from the 17 alliance airlines present at the Japanese hub - including All Nippon Airways and Lufthansa - is divided into two parts. First of all, check-in counters are no longer divided by class of travel as before, but by airline. At the same time, passengers will find 116 self-service check-in kiosks shared by all airlines. These kiosks will enable them to print out their boarding passes and baggage tags very easily before going to the counters to drop off their bags.
This automation of check-in is based on the experience offered at London Heathrow terminal 2, where the alliance has reduced the surface area dedicated to passenger check-in by 20%. It also follows the check-in concept developments presented at the Sao Paulo-Guarulhos and Tom Bradley International hubs in Los Angeles. The alliance is thus continuing to develop standardised processes for airport services, with the aim of offering passengers a smoother service and limiting handling and infrastructure costs.
