United Airlines announced at the end of last week that it would be undertaking the biggest transatlantic expansion in its history, with 10 new flights and five new destinations.
New destinations to be served from next spring include Amman, Bergen (Norway), the Azores as well as Palma de Mallorca and Tenerife in Spain. These five destinations would be served for the first time by an American airline.
In addition, next year United will be adding new routes to five European destinations it already serves. The airline plans to launch Berlin-Washington DC, Dublin-Newark, Milan-Chicago, Munich-Denver and Rome-Newark.
United will also reintroduce a second daily flight to Frankfurt-Newark and a daily flight between Zurich and Chicago. Finally, the airline is consolidating its presence in France. It will offer a daily service between Nice and Newark.. Flights will start on 29 April. The carrier will then be competing with Delta Air Lines and La Compagnie on this route, at least during the summer season.
According to the latest OAG statistics, United Airlines is the fourth largest airline in the world, with 3.23 million seats on sale for the week of 18 October.
