Free has just made a big move in the mobile market with a new, game-changing offer for business travellers. On March 31st, the operator founded by Xavier Niel launched the Forfait Free Max, presented as a world first. This is a plan that includes unlimited 5G/5G+ in mainland France, but also, and most importantly, a 4G/5G internet connection in over 135 destinations worldwide. And all this for €29.99/month with no commitment, while Freebox subscribers will only have to pay €19.99.
For professionals on the go, the announcement addresses a well-known issue. According to a YouGov study conducted for Free in 2026, 95% of French travellers use their phone abroad, but only 81% of them disable their mobile data as a precaution, with a third having already experienced an unexpected bill upon their return.
With the Free Max package, there's no need to buy a local eSIM, subscribe to a temporary plan with virtual operators like Holafly, Airalo or Ubigi, or juggle multiple SIM cards depending on your destination. Coverage extends throughout Europe, but also to the United States, Canada, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Thailand, India, Singapore, Australia, and Brazil. This means about thirty countries in the Americas, over a dozen in Africa and the Middle East.
A package tailored for professional nomadism
Beyond the data, the Free Max plan includes unlimited calls from France to mobiles in Europe, Switzerland and Andorra, as well as to the United States, Canada, China and the DOM. SMS/MMS are also unlimited to Europe, Switzerland, Andorra and the DOM. Free thus positions its offer as a "100% % European" plan, the first of its kind on the market, allowing you to call and browse without extra cost from any country in Europe. Additional services complete the offer: an eSIM Watch option (available in France and abroad), the Free TV+ application (accessible in the European Union) and a mobile VPN (Free mVPN, usable in France).
A professional version available
Free has also simultaneously launched the Forfait Free Pro Max, a B2B version with identical features, offered at €29.99 excluding VAT/month with no commitment. Businesses can subscribe directly on the Free Pro website, by phone, or via the operator's sales teams. Existing Free Pro subscribers can migrate at no cost from their customer account.
Xavier Niel did not hesitate to claim a world first: “ No operator in the world offers that… except Free 🙂 The formula is bold, but requires nuance. In the United States, T-Mobile has indeed offered international roaming in over 215 countries on its high-end plans for several years, with high-speed data capped at a certain volume, after which speeds are throttled to 256 Kbps. Verizon, on the other hand, markets a TravelPass giving access to data in over 210 destinations, but in the form of a daily pass charged in addition to the basic plan.
However, in the end, no American or European operator has to date offered a standard monthly package including truly unlimited, unthrottled data abroad, without extra charges or additional options. The launch comes in a context of a fightback for Free. The operator lost its crown as the mobile recruitment leader in 2025 to Orange and Bouygues Telecom, after having dominated the market between 2022 and 2024. With the Free Max, Free is attempting to regain the initiative in a segment – unlimited international data – hitherto left to specialised virtual operators.
