MKG Consulting has just published its ranking of the world's top 10 hotel groups. largely dominated by Marriott International which passed the 1.4 million rooms mark. Despite the difficulties encountered by all the hotel groups last year, this top 10 still shows a dynamic development and has seen relatively few changes. The main one sees the fall of the Indian start-up Oyowhich was in second place last year and has now fallen back to ninth place. With its fairly flexible affiliation model, its offer rose in a short space of time to 1.2 million rooms, only to fall sharply to 549,000 rooms at the beginning of 2021. While Oyo's ambitions have been scaled back, mainly in China, but also in Europe and the United States, it is still well established in certain Asian markets, including India of course, but also Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan.

The more traditional hotel groups took advantage of this to move up the rankings. Behind Marriott, Jin Jiang is now back in second place worldwide. The Chinese group, which is highly developed in its original market, also has a strong presence throughout the world. through its subsidiaries Louvre Hotels and Radissonwhich were acquired in 2015 and 2019 respectively. The world's third-largest hotel operator, Hilton has tempered its assessment of a year 2020 marked by the pandemic with the achievement of the million-room mark. This was achieved thanks to growth in its product offering of +4.9 %, " the best among Western groups" notes MKG.

IHG which is back in fourth place; Wyndham which, despite a drop in its offer, is now in fifth place; Accor back to sixth place worldwide exceeding 750,000 rooms with growth in its customer base of more than 3 % Choice Hotels in ninth place, with a still positive dynamic: the sector's historic leaders remain firmly established in the ranking of the world's top 10 groups. A top 10 in which Chinese groups are strengthening their positions year after year.

If BTH, owner of the Home Inns brand, closes the ranking, it was Huazhu in particular that stood out last year with the strongest growth in the Top 10 (+23 1TP3Q). In addition to the organic growth of its Joya, Ji, Starway and Hanting brands in China, Huazhu was most notable for its entry into the European market with the integration of the German group Deutsche Hospitality - and the Steigenberger, Intercity, Maxx, Jaz in the City and Zleep brands - whose acquisition it announced at the end of 2019.
