Getting to the district from the airport by taxi
The journey from the airport to the HafenCity district takes half an hour and costs between €25 and €30.
By public transport
From the airport, it takes a total of three-quarters of an hour to get to HafenCity. Take S-Bahn line 1 and then, at Ohlsdorf, the U1 underground line to Meßberg or continue to Hauptbanhof, then take the bus (line 6) to HafenCity. From autumn onwards, the U4 line will link the district to the city centre.
Hotels
HafenCity currently has just one hotel, but Hamburg's tourist office has identified a number of projects scheduled for completion in 2013. The district awaits the opening of a five-star, 244-room Westin hotel next to the futuristic Elbphilhamornie concert hall; a four-star, 400-room hotel called La Mariposa; and a three-star, 90-room Stadthaushotel HafenCity Hamburg. Nearby, the Citadines Michel Hamburg is planned.

So Hamburg
Oberhafen-Kantine
To the east of the district, under the railway line, the Oberhafen-Kantine keeps the memory of the place alive. Since 1925, from the morning coffee to the evening fricadelle, the Kantine has been there to provide a little sweetness and home cooking in a setting that warmly reflects the spirit of the docks. Fortunately, the emergence of HafenCity has preserved this little gem. Stockmeyerstraße 39

Oriental fragrances
Thai, Japanese, Indonesian or Chinese: Asian cuisine has invaded the plates of HafenCity. For Thai cuisine "in the light of the quays", Tai Tan is the most tempting proposition. Still overlooking the water, Sala Thai offers a more "traditional" setting. Design, COA offers "asian feelgoodfood". Pan-Asianism is on the menu at Chilli Club, which was the first restaurant to open in HafenCity in 2005.

Shopping
The town planners have made a radical choice: "no shopping centre in HafenCity".. Instead of vast malls, the district offers a myriad of small boutiques with a strong penchant for innovation. E-collection, the "mobility showroom" at Am Sandtorkai 50, is a prime example of this high-tech vocation. On the fashion side, there is also plenty of originality: Love my closet (Am Kaiserkai 30) and LoLa Hamburg (Am Sandtorpark 14) for women, and Stoffsüchtig (Überseeboulevard 2) for all tastes. Tea is another of the district's specialities, with two large "counters": Wasserschloss Speicherstadt (Dienerreihe 4) for a contemporary atmosphere and Meßmer Momentum (Am Kaiserkai 10) for a more timeless style. Also worth a visit are the showrooms of companies based in the district, including the Unilever boutique and the Spiegel Shop. Finally, if you're short of time to find your way around all these addresses, the tourist office lists two personal shoppers, Christian Hoffman (www.dereinkaufsbegleiter. de) and Maria Hans (www.style-service.de). On the way home, apart from the Niederegger mass-bread chocolates, Michelsen biscuits, schnapps and Lübeck Rotspon red wine, Hamburg airport offers few options for "local" souvenir shopping.
