Avis targets car-sharing with Zipcar

Avis has positioned itself to take over Zipcar, the self-service car hire company, and hopes to finalise the acquisition by next spring.

Car hire is changing, and the heavyweights in the market are adapting their offerings. On 2 January, Avis announced its intention to acquire Zipcar, the American leader in the self-service car hire market, with some 10,000 vehicles. In this way, Avis is banking on the changing relationship between car ownership and use, by developing a range of services to complement 'traditional' car rental services.
