A national demonstration will disrupt travel in Belgium this Friday, October 9. Brussels Airlines plans to cancel 40% of its flights. «Following the national demonstration in Belgium on Friday, October 9, and the expected impact on our handling partner’s workforce, we unfortunately have no choice but to cancel part of our flight schedule,» the company says.
Public transport will also be affected on Friday. STIB expects a «highly disrupted» network on October 9. However, the information remains very vague: «At this stage, it is not possible to predict precisely the extent of the disruptions or which lines will be affected. We invite those who are able to plan alternative solutions for getting around in Brussels on that day to do so,» STIB states. The impact is expected to become clearer on the same morning, around 6 a.m.

In the wake of this, the Belgian rail system will also be affected by social unrest. A strike action is scheduled to begin on Sunday and continue throughout Monday. «Due to the strike organized by the CGSP socialist union against government budget proposals, fewer trains will run from Sunday, October 11, at 10 p.m., until Monday, October 12 (last train),» SNCB indicates.
