It is now compulsory to register on an online application for anyone coming from an area considered to be at risk. These include France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland. You need to log on to the www.einreiseanmeldung.de. The page is available in French, although the names of the countries still appear in German.
You must then complete a questionnaire specifying the means of transport, the day of arrival and the address of residence in Germany. Proof of registration must be provided to the authorities on request.
Information is automatically communicated the health office at the place of stay. The federal government specifies that all information collected is destroyed 14 days after entry into Germany.
The health office will tell the traveller where to take a second test after five days' quarantine. If the test is negative, the quarantine is lifted. This obligation to register is necessary even if you have had a negative covid test.
A new development is Germany's recognition of the antigenic tests. According to the Robert Koch Institute, which is responsible for health protection, "the antigen tests for the direct detection of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus are accepted from all countries, provided they meet the minimum criteria recommended by the WHO for the quality of SARS-CoV-2-Ag rapid tests".
Border workers exempt
There is an exemption to this compulsory 5- or 10-day quarantine. Cross-border commuters staying for a maximum of 24 hours are not required to. The same rule applies to journeys to the Baden-Württembergthe Rhineland-Palatinate and the Saarland.
By order of the federal government, hotels are no longer accepting tourists, but some are still open for business travellers.
In fact, it is Germans travelling to France who are most at risk of possible sanctions, particularly for unnecessary travel!
