Finnair's strategy takes an (almost) 180° turn

Finnair, which has become the "niche airline in Asia", has had to abandon part of its positioning in the face of the geopolitical context. But it has lost none of its agility in reinventing its business model. "Our objective is to return to profit in 2023 and celebrate our 100th anniversary", explains Javier Roig, Director of France and Southern Europe at Finnair.

Finnair has been until 2019 the airline specialising in Asia with a network that included many secondary cities with little or no service from competitors. At the time, the Finnair network included cities such as Sapporo and Fukuoka in Japan and Xian in China. " But the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has changed everything. And our management had to take on board the fact that the closure of Russian airspace is likely to be complete by 2023. Hence a 180° turn in our strategy" says Javier Roig, Director for France and Southern Europe.
