Special report - Cuba: the Caribbean myth

José Angel Treviño Suárez, Commercial Director of Havanatur in Havana

What are Havanatur's strengths?

José Angel Treviño Suárez: Havanatur has a huge advantage: it's been around for 30 years. So we have a certain amount of experience, which means that we can often approach the same customers, who always place their trust in us.

What is the general programme?

J. A. T. S. : The groups arrive in Havana, and for two days we take them for a stroll around the old town, visiting museums and stopping off for rum tastings such as at the Bodeguita del Medio. Then we take them for another two or three days to a seaside resort. This could be Varadero or Cayo Coco.

How big are these groups?

J. A. T. S. : It varies a lot depending on the customer. We get people mainly from Canada, England, Spain and France. In general, these groups have between 60 and 300 people, but we've already welcomed 500 people or more for conferences.

What activities are on offer?

J. A. T. S. : On the city side, we take them to the National Theatre to see the National Ballet of Cuba, or to a cocktail party at Finca Vigia, Ernest Hemingway's former home, or to the Museum of Fine Arts. There are also catamaran excursions with stopovers on the islands, water scooters, snorkelling and beach picnics. And then, on the land side, thermal baths or a hike above the canopy.
