It was the media centre for the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022. It will soon be one of the world's largest convention and exhibition centres, when it opens in 2025. A place to welcome heads of state during the international summits organised in the Chinese capital, as well as major business events such as trade fairs and conferences of all kinds.
Closed at the end of the Games in 2022, the China National Convention Center phase II (CNCC II) is currently being transformed into the China National Convention Center phase II (CNCC II). MICE flagship in China, a vast complex with a total surface area of around 780,000m², including hotels, shops and offices. But the project, which should add a new dimension to Beijing's appeal as a hub for international trade, is based above all on its 420,000m² main building designed by Christian de Portzamparc.
Built in the Olympic Park area, close to the "Bird's Nest" - the stadium designed at the time by fellow Pritzker prize-winners Herzog & de Meuron - and the China National Convention Centre I, a legacy of the 2008 Summer Olympics, this new convention centre will offer XXL infrastructures for organisers. These include a reception lobby with 26 m high ceilings, a 7,300 m² plenary hall on the first level, and a host of meeting rooms on the second level, ranging from 300 m² to 2,000 m² and accommodating up to 20,000 people at any one time, in addition to exhibition halls for 50,000 people.
To top it all off, the CNCC II is devoting its top floor to VIP meetings. To welcome VIPs in an exclusive worthy of their rankThe convention centre will feature a 3,000 m² hall for summits and a 5,000 m² Grand Ballroom for gala dinners, as well as a 2,600 m² events hall. While the entire building meets high environmental standards, according to LEED Platinum, Chinese-style modern gardens, partly protected by a glass sunroof, extend over almost 10,000 m². For moments of relaxation or calm discussions on the future of the planet.
Luxury and top-of-the-range with Marriott
To provide accommodation for participants visiting Beijing, Beijing North Star, the owner and manager of the China National Convention Center like many other MICE venues in China, has signed an agreement with the Marriott group to open two hotels, expected to be located within the complex in 2026. One will clearly target visiting VIPs, while the Ritz-Carlton Beijing NorthThe new hotel will feature a design by renowned interior architect Yabu Pushlberg. The contemporary setting will include 282 rooms and suites, six gastronomic areas and, on the relaxation side, an indoor swimming pool, spa and fitness centre.
In addition to the many meeting venues on offer at CNCC II, the Chinese capital's third Ritz Carlton will be adding its own conference and events space, with a surface area of almost 1,000 m². The one planned for the Beijing Marriott Marquisthe other hotel planned for the site, will be even bigger. Spanning more than 3,200 m², it will include a large ballroom and two junior ballrooms, as well as three meeting rooms and an executive lounge, the M Club. In terms of accommodation, the top-of-the-range hotel will boast 671 rooms and suites, as well as several restaurants and a swimming pool.
