The Radisson Group joins Accor and Iberostar at COP27 one of the leading hotel companies to sign the Glasgow Declaration on climate action in tourism. The text, which will be presented at COP26 in 2021 in the Scottish city, concludes with a commitment to " halve emissions from tourism over the next decade and achieve net zero emissions as soon as possible before 2050" .
In total, the Glasgow Declaration now has just over 700 signatories, including tour operators and DMCs, travel agencies and OTAs such as Skyscanner and Evaneos and some sixty destinations represented by their tourism institutions. These include Catalonia and the Canary Islands in Spain, Scotland, Finland and Monaco, as well as Portugal, the Netherlands, Norway and Quebec, and cities such as Athens, Barcelona, Gothenburg, Helsinki and Vancouver.
Radisson one of three major groups to sign up
In the hotel sector, around thirty contracts have been signed, mainly by independent establishments and small groups located in sensitive tourist areas, including the three major groups mentioned above, including Radisson. " To support this commitment, each signatory must present a concrete climate plan and updated within 12 months, as demonstrated by the detailed transformation of Radisson Hotel Group into Net Zero" said Dirk Glaesser, Director of Sustainable Tourism Development at the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).
This signature follows the announcement a few weeks ago of another similar commitment, this one in line with the 2015 Paris Agreement: that ofachieving net zero emissions by 2050 in line with the objectives set by the Science Based Targets initiative. Last September, the Radisson Group received confirmation and validation of its short-term scientific targets, in line with its commitment to aim for net zero hospitality by the middle of the century. Among the targets announced, a reduction in category 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions of 46 % and 28% of scope 3 GHGs by 2030 compared with 2019.
Through these commitments, Radisson is acting as a the driving force behind green hospitality on a global level and encourages it in its communications, "other hotel groups to join the call for strong action "This is one of the aims of the Glasgow Declaration. This knock-on effect is one of the aims of the Glasgow Declaration, which " expresses a clear direction for the journey and a global vision for industry" says Inge Huijbrechts, Senior VP Sustainability at Radisson Hotel Group. " Together, we are mobilising the industry to take effective climate action and achieve net zero emissions by 2050 as quickly as possible." said UNWTO's Dirk Glaesser.
