SNCF announced its launch last January, at the presentation of the its ecological mobility project Planete Voyages. And now it's done: its mobility comparator is online since 4 March on the home page of the OUI.sncf website.
Journey times by train, but also by coach, car, car-sharing and plane; environmental footprint, with the amount of CO2 emitted by the different modes of transport studied; useful time on board, i.e. the average time available to the traveller to read, work or watch a film: the first version of this comparator analyses 63 route combinations offered on TGV and TER trains, which will account for a third of all journeys sold on OUI.sncf in 2019.
The aim of this comparator is simple: to provide travellers with clear, objective information to help them choose the means of transport that suits them best, while also highlighting the environmental benefits of rail travelCO2 emissions are up to 50 times lower than those of a car and 80 times lower than those of a plane.
Obviously, the train is the big winner in this little game of comparisons, arriving at the top of the rankings. in first position in 100 % of cases on the environmental criterion and on the useful time criterion. As far as journey time is concerned, while air travel is often the quickest option, rail is three times out of four ahead of the car, in 48 out of 63 cases. These are all arguments in favour of rail for both practical and ecological reasons.
