Rail: fares up and quality of service down, says ART

The Autorité de Régulation des Transports (ART) has published its review of 2023, a year marked by an increase in train use and fares, while service quality deteriorated. However, the ART welcomes the increase in services and the reduction in fares on the first lines to be opened up to competition.

As the year 2024 draws to a close, the French Transport Regulation Authority (ART) has just published its study of the French rail transport market, based on figures for 2023. In its 8e annual review, the Autorité confirms first of all the steady rise in the number of rail passengers since the end of CovidThis represents growth of 6% compared with 2022. Since 2019, the increase has even amounted to 21% for TERs and 6% for TGVs despite a reduction in high-speed rail services of almost 3% due to industrial action and the withdrawal from service of around 40 trains.
