Amadeus connects to Italian rail with Trenitalia

Amadeus' rail strategy is moving ahead at high speed: the GDS has just formalised a worldwide distribution agreement with Trenitalia, with a view to distributing the Italian carrier's content via all Amadeus channels.

A few weeks after signing a new agreement with the SNCF, Amadeus is continuing its conquest of the railways on the other side of the Alps. On Tuesday 26 June, the GDS announced the signing of an agreement giving Trenitalia access to the Amadeus global network, with its 91,000 points of sale. "Travel consultants around the world will be able to book tickets for both Trenitalia Frecce Alta Velocità high-speed trains (i.e. Frecciarossa and Frecciargento) and Frecciabianca through existing sales channels and via Amadeus' global distribution system", says the GDS in a press release, which also warns: "Trenitalia's remaining medium- and long-distance lines will soon follow".

"Our aim is to develop a rail distribution platform offering a wide range of companies," says Thomas Drexler, Head of Amadeus Rail. "This is a very important moment in the history of the European rail industry, which will be expanding its network and seeking to attract new customers. To enable this growth, we need to offer accessibility and availability comparable to the airline industry. That's why global distribution is absolutely fundamental to the rail industry today. By making Trenitalia's inventory available across multiple channels and focusing on the customer's travel experience, we will support the company's growth," says Thomas Drexler.
