As part of its Etihad Greenliner initiative, the Emirati company formed a strategic partnership with Boeing at the end of 2019. It is now continuing tests with the aircraft manufacturer to accelerate the technological development of a a safer and more environmentally-friendly commercial aircraft. In practice, the ecoDemonstrator programme will use a Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner as a test bed to explore several avenues over a four-week period, before the aircraft is put into service in Abu Dhabi.
The tests include flights using a sustainable fuel mix, noise measurements using sensors on the aircraft and on the ground in partnership with NASA and Safran to ensure quieter operations, and simultaneous information sharing between pilots, air traffic controllers and the airline's operations centre. All in order to optimising route efficiency and improve safety by reducing congestion in operations and radio frequencies.
