How is the destination evolving?
Nicolas Martin - In terms of business tourism, and in particular the international congress market, we have moved up from 217 in the world rankings in 2007 to 77 in 2012. With an average of 25 international congresses a year, Bordeaux is ranked 4th among French business cities by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA). Our aim is to become a permanent fixture in the top 3 outside Paris, which will put us in a position to compete with Lyon and Nice, cities on a much larger scale than we are.
What assets support this ambition?
N. M. - First of all, the reputation of our brand. People all over the world have stars in their eyes at the mention of Bordeaux. We're seen as a symbol of the French art of living, and that's an invaluable asset when it comes to attracting far-flung markets and major conferences. What's more, we're making rapid progress in terms of air travel, the sinews of war. The city is getting better and better connections. In July 2017, the TGV will link Paris and Bordeaux in two hours, further enhancing our appeal. Finally, our investment programme gives us the means to achieve our ambitions.
What exactly are these investments?
N. M. - As well as the new stadium equipped to host events, the main aim is to modernise the exhibition centre. This €70 million project will enable us to host larger events, with up to 3,500 participants. The Cité des Civilisations du Vin is the other major project, costing €85 million. It is due to open in early 2016. We expect it to become the totem of the city, as much for its innovative architecture as for its content. Combining museography and tastings, its concept - offering a sensory panorama of wine-making know-how from Antiquity to the present day - will establish it as a beacon for wine tourism.
