Rotterdam is home to a new hotel, The Slaak, located in the dynamic Kralingen-West district, just a few minutes from the city centre and the old port. The only hotel to open its doors in the Dutch city this year, this hotel - part of the Tribute Portfolio lifestyle brand of the Marriott - is part of a emblematic building of the city, Het Slaakhuys. Designed in 1952 by architect Jo Vegter, this former headquarters of the Het Vrije Volk newspaper now offers 74 rooms, all with a design inspired by the 1950s and the history of the press, including its meeting rooms, called Press Rooms, and its restaurant-bar Didot 34, in reference to the famous typographer Firmin Didot.
Designed by the Dutch company HDVL, the décor plays on a palette of green and yellow colours and blends marble, wood and brass, culminating in an impressive bronze bar in the lobby.
