The near future of Virgin Atlantic promises to be a busy and ambitious one. On the eve of its fortieth anniversary in 2024, the airline organised its very first Virgin Atlantic Customer Experience Showcase event in London on Tuesday. It unveiled its new ambitions in terms of customer experience, which will cover a wide range of improvements. The British carrier has already distinguished itself recently with the inauguration of a Clubhouse in Los Angelesin March. Its new ambitions will be reflected in the revival of two other emblematic shows: Virgin Atlantic plans to invest several million pounds to renovate its lounges in New York (JFK) and, of course, London Heathrow..

But the most substantial investment will be in Virgin Atlantic aircraft: 17 billion dollars will be mobilised to transform the fleet. A metamorphosis that will give pride of place to premium seatsthe airline's move upmarket. By 2028, Virgin Atlantic will operate a fleet of 45 new-generation 100 % aircraft: 19 Airbus A330-900s, 12 A350-1000s and 14 787-9s.
Concerning these BoeingWith the introduction of the 787-9, Virgin Atlantic is planning a complete interior refit, based on the design of the A330neo, with new seats in all cabins. Economy Class will lose ground - from 192 to 127 seats - while the Retreat Suite will make its appearance on the 787-9: eight seats will be available in each Upper Class cabin. The Upper Class cabin will therefore be upgraded, as will the Premium cabin, which will increase from 35 to 56 seats.
At the same time, the Virgin Atlantic fleet will be expanded from the third quarter of 2026 with the arrival of ten A330neo. Here too, the changes in configuration reflect an upmarket in-flight experience. Economy class has been reduced (from 184 to 128 seats), and the forward classes have been extended: 48 seats in Upper Class and 56 in Premium. The Retreat offer will even include four additional suites.

" Our announcements today [Tuesday 8 July] are a glimpse into the future of how we care for, serve and delight each and every one of our customers. "says Siobhan Fitzpatrick, Chief Experience Officer at Virgin Atlantic. She continued: " Every new product, partnership and platform we unveil has been shaped by customer feedback and fuelled by the ingenuity of our people. We understand who our customers are and everything we do starts with them, as we use our knowledge to create thoughtful experiences that stand out brilliantly at every opportunity ".
Starlink and OpenAI join the Virgin Atlantic network
The other big news unveiled this week in London concerns connectivity, and more broadly the airline's digital offering. Virgin Atlantic has announced that it has become the first British airline to join forces with Starlink. This will mean free, streaming-quality Wi-Fi, with unlimited use for members of the Flying Club programme. The installation will cover the entire Virgin Atlantic fleet (Airbus A330neo, A350 and Boeing 787), and will begin in the third quarter of 2026 and be completed by the end of 2027.
Starlink is not the only high-profile tech name to be added to the range. Virgin Atlantic. As part of the launch of its new mobile application, scheduled for December, OpenAI and Tomoro.ai will also feature. The company promises a digital concierge providing personalised - and hands-free if needed - assistance anytime, anywhere and in any language. "Whether you prefer to type, scan or speak, it helps customers find travel ideas, find their way around the airport and much more, providing them with rapid assistance while on the move," say company officials.

Loyalty is also one of the areas targeted for improvement by the airline, with a boost given to "long-standing" customers who are not frequent flyers. The carrier is now introducing recognition for customers who have been loyal for several years but do not travel enough to progress through the levels of the programme. But the future of the frequent flyer programme will be revealed in more detail in the coming months.
Shai Weiss, CEO of Virgin Atlantic, is delighted with these new projects: " Over the last four decades we've grown from a challenger to a leader and a premium long-haul airline. We exist to make our customers smile, it's as simple as that. We are obsessed with finding new ways to delight our customers, through our exceptional people, with the aim of becoming the most loved airline. We're investing billions to operate the youngest fleet on the Atlantic, be the first UK airline to offer free, high quality Wi-Fi across its entire fleet, offer more premium cabins and completely refurbish our 787 fleet, not to mention a new app that puts the world of Virgin Atlantic in your pocket, all thanks to our exceptional people. The best is yet to come "promises the Virgin Atlantic boss.
