The sheer size of Gangnam makes it difficult to quickly explore the local sights, which are nonetheless well worth a visit, whether by taxi or metro. Facing the COEX convention centre, the Bongeunsa temple majestically embodies the Korean duality, steeped in tradition but irresistibly racing towards modernity. A walk under the trees - bucolic, silent - turns spiritual as you gaze up at the majestic Buddha that dominates the hill. The COEX aquarium or a visit to Kukkiwon, the world headquarters of taekwondo, are other options between meetings.

"All you have to do is cross the bridge", sang Brassens. The refrain can also be heard in Seoul, where you can spend an afternoon on the north bank visiting the palaces of the historic district. At the end of the day, the young, international atmosphere of the Itaewon district makes it an ideal place to have a drink in one of the many bars, all vying with each other for originality. On a completely different note, the demilitarised zone (DMZ) offers direct contact with the tumultuous history of the country's relations with its northern neighbour. The border can be reached in 1 hour, provided you use an approved agency.
Shopping
If Seoul is often regarded as a shopper's temple, Gangnam is its Holy of Holies. There are plenty of shopping centres, including the COEX convention centre. While the most chic shop windows are to be found in the north of the district, on Apgujeong and Cheongdamdong, logically named Fashion Street, Garosu-Gil, which is more 'cutting edge' and less international, is packed with boutiques selling Korean designers. Local young people, who are very fashion-conscious, come here to perfect their wardrobe before enjoying a drink with friends.
