New buildings are beginning to appear in the Santa Giulia and Porta Nueva districts, but it is the CityLife project that is attracting the most attention. Its ambition is to completely redevelop the area around the former Fiera Milano, which has since been transferred to the Rho-Pero convention centre near Malpensa.
Surrounded by a large park and a design museum, three skyscrapers called Il Dritto ('straight'), Il Storto ('twisted') and Il Curvo ('curved') will soon be rising from the ground. Zaha Hadid, Arata Isozaki, Daniel Libeskind and Pier Paolo Maggiora: some of the great names in contemporary architecture have been invited to carry out these redevelopment projects, which are set to profoundly change the city's image.
Nearby, the Milano Convention Centre Plus will open its doors later this year, giving the capital of Lombardy a capacity of 18,000 people in 73 meeting rooms.
